The Enemy Within

August 20, 2012

“A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murderer is less to fear. The traitor is the plague.”

Marcus Tullius Cicero

(106-43 B.C.) Roman Statesman, Philosopher and Orator

Please read the above statement carefully and see if it applies to current events. This is what’s happening to our society today if you think long and hard about it. I’ve been having political discussions with people on the left and right. All they are doing is repeating what they hear instead of doing the research themselves. There are a few out there that think and draw conclusions without the help of the MSM.  My observations of the political atmosphere have become cynical at best.

If you go back to the 2010 mid term elections and look at the Democratic Senate primaries for South Carolina, Alvin Green won the Democratic primary to run against Jim DeMint for the US Senate. Nobody knew who he was, what he stood for, claims that he was a plant abounded. The only reason he was elected to run against DeMint was because his name was the first one on the ballot. The apolitical public chose an unknown because his name was at the top. Didn’t care to research him or the other candidates qualities and values, just the guy at the top of the list.

This was the epiphany for me that we are screwed. Once apathy takes hold in a family, business, community or country, its all downhill from there. The Far-Left and Far-Right have their beliefs that they will fight tooth and claw for. They will cancel each other out in the vote. Its the  inbetweeners that are the problem. Back to what Marcus Tillius Cicero said “he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men.” Politicians will say whatever they have to say to get elected. Their bases will vote for them no matter what. The tweeners are the votes they are looking for. When you see a politician go into a bar to have a drink with the common man for a photo op, when you hear the cadence of a speech and trying to sound like the man in the audience. The politician is not being real, he’s trolling for votes.

“He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. – I am aiming this part directly at Obama and his surrogates. He is cutting the nation into special interest groups. Hoping that all together they will re-elect him for another 4 more years. I know both parties have done this but not with the finesse of Team Obama.
